In the sixth-season finale, Dexter and Homicide try to stop the Doomsday Killers from committing one final murder, while Debra deals with a new emotional situation. Original Air Date: Dec 18, 2011. Guest Cast Mos Def: Brother Sam
Brother Sam as a ghost? Now THIS is siriously fucked up. I can understand Harry and Brian as ghosts representing Dexter's brighter and darker sides. But Sam? What next? Is Dexter going to start seeing ghosts of Doakes, Lila, or Miguel?
ReplyDeleteWhy not? He even sees his mom on occasion. The guy is a psycho, he's allowed to have these things happen to him.
ReplyDeleteHe is not a psycho.Psycho is a shortening reffering to either psychotic or psychopathic, neither of which is Dexter.Psychotic means sufferer of psychosis.Psychosis is a impaired mental state described as "loss of contact with reality" and its symptoms are hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder and catatonia.Dexter has none of this. When he sees his father or his brother and so on he is not hallucinating. He is aware they are not real. They are not ghosts. They are mental projections of Dexter counscious and probably his dark passenger in some cases. He is not like Travis who genuinly believe Gellar was there and talking to him. That's what a psychosis is.When we saw Travis speaking with the "professor" we saw him speaking to himself, but when Dexter talks with his father, even if there are persons around him they don't notice Dexter talking to someone.Because Dexter isn't actually talking, he is just thinking.Maybe for him imagining an interlocutor is a more easy way than just thinking. What I mean here is that Dexter isn't hallucinating, not one bit.He purposely(uncounsciously) imagines how it would be like to speak with those persons.Travis on the other hand is very psychotic. And now for the psychopath part.Psychopath means sufferer of psychopathy. It's one of the ten personality disorders(in DSM is under the name Antisocial Personality Disorder) and its symptoms include glibness and superficial charm, grandiose sense of self-worth, cunning and manipulative, poor behavioural control, failure to accept responsability for own actions and wrong doings, lack of empathy, lack of remorse, guilt and shame and so on and so forth.Dexter has some of this, but he lacks most of what makes a real psychopath.Dexter has superficial charm, he is cunning and manipulative, lack of empathy. But the others, he doesn't have a grandiose sense of self-worth, he can control himself most of the times, most of the time he takes responsability for what he's doing, even though only to himself. The experiences of remorse of guilt are debatable. For instance when he killed that photographer Jonathan Farrow and then he learnt he killed the wrong man he was kind of shocked, he even sit down and thought about it.A real psychopath would have continue like "meh" and that's it.No retrospection or "I killed the wrong guy thoughts".Dexter is even capable of love.He himself admitted he loved Rita at her funeral and we even saw Dexter grieving for her in his own way.The point is Dexter does things a psychopath could never do, a psychopath could do all those things but as an act, a feigned emotion and reaction.Whereas Dexter actually experienced those things, he didn't faked them and all the audience saw this. There are many things that expose Dexter as a non-psychopath.Why do we know him as one?Because it's a part or was a part of the show's promotion.Come watch the psychopath who is pretending to be a normal person. But Dexter and I mean the tv show Dexter, not the Jeff Lindsay's novels Dexter, is not neither a psychopath nor a psychotic person. If we really want to psychologically diagnose him we can most likely classify him as a schizoid. But not any kind of schizoid, a secret schizoid.Meaning a person who has schizoid personality disorder, but pretends to be normal just like how a psychopath does, only the schizoid is not a psychopath.A real psychopath seemed to be his brother, Brian who displayed every one of the symptoms of psychopathy. And about the idea of Brother Sam as a another mental projection guiding Dexter, I really like it.I was a little upset Brother Sam was killed off so early.
ReplyDeletePsycho = someone who writes an essay explaining why Dexter is not.
ReplyDelete@12:05 I laughed.
ReplyDeleteThe ghost thing has been taken WAY too far at this point. Harry was plenty (with Brian having a cameo in 2 or 3 episodes, if i remember correctly, in season 2).
Bringing back Brian was overboard, and done at the WRONG time. Gellar as a ghost was A-W-F-U-L. And now Brother Sam? Unbelievable. What's to stop us as viewers from thinking Rita is next? Hell, why not Trinity? Why not Miguel, or Doakes? May as well even slip in the tooth fairy at some point.
Yeah, we're kinda full of ghosts now... bad idea, I don't see it. I mean, Harry and Brian, ok, like the first Anonymous says, they represent the brigther and darker side of Dexter. But Brother Sam... yeah, I also winder if Dexter is going to see everyone, Rita, Lila, Doakes, Miguel Prado... all of his victims...
ReplyDeleteWould LIKE DEXTER, PRISON BREAK, LOST, THE WALKING DEAD OR JERICHO !!!!?
ReplyDeleteHELLO, I would appreciate if you recommend any series similar to the foregoing! I DO NOT LIKE THE SERIES SIGEN NOT A STORY (LIKE THE SIMPSONS OR HOUSE) AND THE OTHER DAY VI BOARDWALK EMPIRE AND THE SOPRANO AND MADE ME VERY HEAVY! THANKS
Well I hope its not a ghost...perhaps dexter just had a remember of brother sam.....
ReplyDeleteDexter is NOT a psychopath what the hell have you been smoking? Season 6 is the worst of them all even season 5 at least had a compelling story that continued throughout the series and made you wonder what was going to happen throughout the series. Boyd and johnny were interesting. Colin Hanks' character is fucking boring and badly acted and even worse completely predictable. This years writing is forced, predictable and lazy. Every season I could not wait to see the next episode and this season I dont even care whether I see it a week later or not. Such a shame.
ReplyDeleteAnon 2:37 how can you judge a season when you haven't watched the final two episodes?? Are you fucking kidding me? We all no that the final to episodes of every season of Dexter are the most interesting. So... STOP bitching about season 6.
ReplyDeleteit was, for sure, the worst season ever. a piece of crap with no direction. where is our hero dex? it's just scary that it will take more two seasons to fry this fucker. the once great show is dyin' in front of our eyes...
ReplyDelete@2:46 you can DEFINITELY judge the season before the last two episodes. I dont care how good the last two episodes are, or what they do for the series as a whole, the die on this season has been cast and it was a BAD SEASON. The ONLY excitement i've had week after week is the hope that maybe *THIS* week my show will return to being amazing like it has been the last 5 seasons. I have not bee on the edge of my seat this season, i have not been excited to see the storyline play out...every hope i've had for it has been dashed time and time again with Gellar being a ghost only being the most disappointing of them all.
ReplyDeleteIf the last two episodes are awesome and set up a great endgame, hey, thats great, but all it will make me wonder is why the first 10 episodes had to be so awful.
I just know that when Dexter ends for good, i will be upset.... Truly a good show!
ReplyDeleteUrgh...so many people here bitching about something that they don't even know if it's going to happen...and they still call themselves fans of the show. Bullshit.
ReplyDeleteHuge fan since day one here - I've thought each series had it's moments of brilliance and terror. This season I was disappointed in a few glitches that I thought - wait that wouldn't have really happened like that - things that don't add up like how did Dex get that guy all the way up into the grain storage by himself, Dex walking through the corn field to a short cut to eat - how did he know that short cut would take him there if he had to ask where a place was to eat? STuff like that - just some sloppy writing this year that I have rarely seen before.
ReplyDeleteI like the plot subject matter of introducing God and I hope it doesn't turn out to be just another agenda against people of faith. It could be so very engaging if it leaves all sides hanging open for discussion and discovery.
I didn't see the Geller was dead twist coming and that was a bonus. The murders have been strikingly gruesome and unusual for added and appreciated horror. I still feel protective of Dex - and hope that new tech assistant isn't going to cause him trouble. If I have hopes for next year it is that there will be more characters to hate - as those seasons were the best. Doakes and Lila were both characters we loved to hate. And I'd like to see Dex begin to heal - and he has the motivation - his son.
Don't ever end Dexter! It is the ONLY series I've watched on TV for at least thirty years. I hate TV - it bores me. Dexter has been a shining light of entertainment for those of us who usually can so easily see what happens next and who can guess an ending to a show five minutes in. Keep Dexter alive!
Much love to all of the cast and crew.
hm.. am I the only one wondering about whats with this scenes with Deb and Dexter? I think Deb realizes that she has strong feelings for Dexter. The moment when she looks at him and then the camera will only show his mouth? hallo obvious?
ReplyDeleteI think that Jamie will discover Dexters darkpassenger. I think this would be a great direction
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Deb's new emotional situation is an infatuation with Dexter.
ReplyDeleteI think the emotional situation will be her feelings for Dexter.
ReplyDeleteAnd anon 8:04, I've been thinking all along that Jamie discovering his secret is a possibility. She's so close to Dexter and Harrison. And I can't help but wonder about Jamie and Harrison being in danger, maybe at the expense of Louis. It could be really interesting!
Dexter should kill: Dexter.. ha, nah i'm kidding.. but you know that john lithgow is like: i sucked every bit of intensity out of that show with my brilliant performance. oh, and i kinda dig Deb being into her stepbrother, or should i say wanting him in her. Also, to the psych person earlier... at the end of season one he showed his grandiose delusion, dreaming that people would cheer him as a hero for his hobby. He does show sociopathic, lack of remorse tendencies; he broke his code, as you used to point out his grief for rita, by killing a seedy, yet innocent guy and was proud of it... this season, in comparison is decent, nothing like 1 and 4, but that's obviously a lot to live up to.. p.s. i wish they had picked someone other than colin hanks... when he was announced, he tweeted that he HAD to watch the first five seasons, like it was a drag... and it seems to show in his lack of performance. i hate to say it, but it sorta seems like m.c. hall is off his game a little. Maybe the emmy went to his head a little... i feel like i'm seeing michael c. hall, but his job is to give me dexter. His ex-wife, i think has become a more solid performer.. their marriage must not have been real, and they both seem gay. still love the show ... but gimme dexter, not Hall
