Clyde Phillips Teases Dexter: Original Sin: "Expect What You Have Seen Before, But Better"

The Showrunner and executive producer of Dexter: Original Sin teases the prequel.

At the Dexter: Original Sin panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips teased some exciting developments for the prequel series. Among the highlights was the surprising announcement of a new Dexter sequel series starring Michael C. Hall, revealed in the last three minutes of the panel.

Phillips, who served as showrunner and executive producer for Dexter Seasons 1-4, Dexter: New Blood, and now Dexter: Original Sin, and Dexter: Resurrection, shared intriguing details about the upcoming prequel. Discussing the all-star cast, he remarked: "This is the first time in any show I've done where I've gotten all my first choices for actors, including you [Sarah Michelle], and this never happens. I mean, look at these guys."

Regarding the decision to set Dexter: Original Sin in 1991, Phillips explained: "We wanted Dexter to be a certain age, just starting out in Miami Metro Police. We needed him to quit college and become an intern in the police department's forensics division. So, when we did the math on everybody's ages, that's why we came up with 1991."

Phillips also revealed that the Miami Metro Police Department set would mirror the original series, with minor adjustments to reflect the early 1990s:

"It was a surreal feeling to step back onto that set. We have hundreds of people working for us, and we're holding meetings every week to ensure period authenticity. Someone suggested a video game, and I said, 'Nope, that's 1992, we can't do it.' We're all working really hard to make it accurate, and it's so much fun to have telephone cord landlines."

When asked by panel moderator and Dexter: Original Sin special guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar what to expect from the show, Phillips responded:

"You can expect what you have seen before, but better. Seeing these characters as their younger selves is amazing, and the storytelling—where it goes—will be surprising, astonishing, and satisfying."
