America's favorite fictional serial killer is attracting a whole new generation of fans!
The original Dexter series, which debuted in 2006, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Since the show returned to Netflix after nearly four years of absence in the US and many other countries, it has reclaimed its rightful place at the top of streaming ratings charts.
According to Nielsen streaming ratings for the last week of June, the original Dexter series, which ran from 2006 to 2013, was the second most-watched TV series, with 1.48 billion minutes viewed. This placed it ahead of popular titles with new episodes such as FX's The Bear, Prime Video's The Boys, Netflix's Bridgerton, HBO's House of the Dragon, and others. These impressive numbers reflect viewership in the United States alone.
In the first week of July, the most recent data available, Dexter experienced a slight drop in ratings but remained strong, maintaining a competitive edge against the aforementioned shows, as illustrated in the graph below:
On Dexter's rising popularity, Dexter: Resurrection star Michael C. Hall recently said: "I think there’s many different ways this show appeals to people as there are people who watch it. But I think maybe a biding thing is, in a world in which we feel a sense of being out of control people like spending time with a character who’s taking his own, unique control of his little corner of the world,” he explained. “I think we all have our shadow side that we contend with and Dexter’s is obviously a little weightier than most. People enjoy spending time with someone who is doing his best to take responsibility for that side in his sort of outside-the-box way and morally grey way. People, I think, relish the invitation to identify with someone who is contending with this much darkness, and maybe contending with it in a way that is arguably admirable — even though he’s doing what he’s doing."
