Paramount Television Studios Shuts Down: What Does This Mean for the Dexter Spinoffs?

Could this impact Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection?

Paramount Television Studios, created to reintroduce Paramount Pictures into television production, is shutting down as part of Paramount Global's initiative to cut $500 million amid industry upheaval. This marks the second attempt by Paramount Pictures to enter the TV market, distinct from the original studio that evolved from Desilu Productions, known for classics like "I Love Lucy" and "Star Trek."

“This has been a challenging and transformative time for the entire industry, and sadly, our studio is not immune,” said Nicole Clemens, president of the unit, which debuted in 2013, in a memo to staffers. “Over the past 11 years, she said, the studio “has weathered seemingly insurmountable obstacles through a combination of strength, determination, and unwavering commitment. We met these challenges with incredible resilience, creativity, and passion for what we do, and I could not be prouder of our team. We’ve also had the privilege to collaborate with some of the most brilliant creative talent in the industry to help tell incredible stories seen around the world, entertaining and shaping culture.”

The studio aimed to leverage Paramount's film portfolio by producing TV series tied to its renowned movies, collaborating with emerging streaming platforms seeking content. Its productions included "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Bly Manor" for Netflix, "Reacher" for Prime Video, HBO's "Station Eleven", "The Offer" for Paramount+, a Jack Ryan series for Amazon Prime Video, "The Spiderwick Chronicles" for Roku, a "Time Bandits" revival for Apple TV+, and others.

All current series and development projects made under the Paramount Television Studios umbrella will move to CBS Studios.

What does this mean for the upcoming Dexter spinoffs?

Both Dexter: Original Sin—the prequel set to debut this December—and Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel series featuring Michael C. Hall slated for a summer 2025 release, seem to remain unaffected by the situation, as they are produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios.
