"Angel’s personal life should be very interesting" the young Batista actor said about Season 2.
With Dexter: Original Sin officially wrapping up its 10-episode first season, it's safe to say the prequel series delivered on its promise. Exploring Dexter Morgan’s formative years before he became a serial killer, the show provided an in-depth look at his complex relationship with his father, Harry.
While this season didn’t allow many Miami Metro characters to take center stage, one actor stood out in his portrayal of a beloved figure. James Martinez captivated audiences as the younger Angel Batista, mirroring the presence and mannerisms of David Zayas’ original performance.
Following the release of Episode 10, "Code Blues," Martinez sat down with TV Insider to discuss pivotal Miami Metro moments and share his hopes for future seasons of Dexter: Original Sin.
Was Angel Batista Speaking for Himself When Addressing Harry?
James Martinez: "I think Angel was speaking as much for himself as he was for the department. It wasn’t just Harry’s mistake—it was all of us. We were all trying to solve the case, and missing the truth weighed heavily on Angel, just as it did on everyone else.
Angel is deeply human and flawed, yet his heart is always in the right place. He also worries about Harry, concerned that the case might shake Harry’s confidence. When Angel consoles him, he’s reassuring him that it wasn’t his fault. Aaron Spencer was an incredible manipulator, and Angel himself was too close to him. Angel means that both professionally and personally, he never wanted to believe Aaron could be capable of such crimes. That’s who Angel is—always reaching out to support those around him."
Debra Morgan’s Future at Miami Metro and Angel’s Dynamic with Her
"Angel gives everyone the benefit of the doubt—especially a Morgan. His relationship with Harry is strong; he looks up to him. I truly believe Angel deeply respects Harry and his methods. Because of that, he’s willing to welcome any Morgan who joins the station and gives it their best effort. He’s always there to help."
Angel Batista’s Past and What’s Next for His Character
"Season 1 focused primarily on the Morgans and Harry’s backstory, which was crucial to setting up the series. But moving forward, I’d expect Season 2—and any future seasons—to explore more of Miami Metro’s squad members and their personal lives.
Angel’s backstory should be fascinating. Given his profession and lifestyle, I’d love to see how his work affects his relationships, including his bond with his sister. Is he searching for love? We know he had a difficult divorce in Dexter, so exploring how he met his wife and what he was seeking at that point in his life would add another layer to his character. His job is incredibly demanding, and I imagine that takes a toll on his personal life."
Biggest Surprise in Dexter: Original Sin as a Fan of the Original Series
"For me, it was Harry’s backstory. Seeing the events leading up to him finding Dexter in the shipping container was one of my favorite aspects of the season. It showed how much redemption Harry was seeking—how he tried to do better with Dexter and avoid past mistakes. We never got that depth in the original show, so diving into his mindset and motivations was really compelling. I don’t think a lot of fans expected that."
Hopes for Future Seasons of Dexter: Original Sin
"There’s so much ground to cover. Now that Spencer is out, Miami Metro will go through a transition in leadership. They’ll likely need an operational overhaul—rethinking how they do their jobs, managing trust among colleagues, and handling conflicts of interest between personal relationships and work.
Finding their new captain will be interesting—how Matthews comes into the picture, how he leads, and how his relationships with the squad evolve. LaGuerta still has a lot to prove before becoming a core member of the team. And, of course, James Doakes—his introduction and interactions with the squad should be exciting to explore. Watching how these dynamics shift in Season 2 will be fascinating."
