Patrick Gibson Explains the Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Finale & Reveals Hopes for Season 2

The star of Dexter: Original Sin breaks down all the major events of Episode 10.

The 10-episode run of Dexter: Original Sin has officially concluded after two months of gripping storytelling. The series, which debuted on December 13, wrapped up fittingly on Valentine's Day. Contrary to initial skepticism from some fans, the general consensus is that the prequel delivered a satisfying and compelling narrative.

The Standout Casting of Dexter: Original Sin

One of the highlights of the series was its exceptional casting, thanks to casting director John Papsidera. Stepping into the iconic role of Dexter Morgan, Patrick Gibson faced the daunting challenge of filling Michael C. Hall’s legendary shoes. However, his standout performance silenced any doubts, proving he was the perfect choice to portray young Dexter Morgan.

Following the release of the finale, Episode 10 "Code Blues", TVLine’s Nick Caruso sat down with Patrick Gibson to discuss the season’s biggest moments, including Dexter’s pivotal realization, his experience working with the cast, and his hopes for a potential Season 2.

Patrick Gibson on Spencer’s Shocking Reveal as the Kidnapper

Gibson admitted that he was completely caught off guard by the revelation that Spencer was the kidnapper:

"Honestly, I did not see it coming. I had my suspicions about other people. On the page, and knowing who was going to play him, I fully was not expecting it. It was a complete shock. That was good because, for the most part, Dexter is also in the dark about it. It’s right under his nose, making the betrayal even more significant."

Working Alongside Patrick Dempsey in Intense Scenes

Discussing his on-screen dynamic with Patrick Dempsey, Gibson praised his co-star’s powerful presence:

"He brings so much energy to those intense scenes. There’s a moment after the cartel shootout where he has an outburst, and I remember when they called 'cut,' you could hear a pin drop. The whole crew was in shock. He fully committed, and that was amazing to witness."

Dexter’s Defining Moment: Choosing to Save a Child Over His Bloodlust

A key moment in the finale sees Dexter prioritize saving a child over indulging his Dark Passenger. Gibson reflected on why this was such a pivotal decision:

"There are so many layers to it. It’s almost Greek tragedy-level writing. Harry couldn’t save his own son, which shaped Dexter into who he is. But then, Dexter defies expectations, making a choice that is virtuous rather than instinctual. It’s a major turning point—Dexter takes control of his own fate rather than simply being shaped by Harry."

Is Dexter a Hero or a Villain?

Gibson acknowledges the complexity of Dexter’s morality:

"You could argue yes to every question about him. Is he a hero? A villain? Morally virtuous? It all depends on the lens you view him through. I lean toward hero because he channels his violent urges in a way that prevents harm to innocent people. But does anyone truly have the right to take another life? That’s the moral dilemma that makes Dexter so compelling."

Dexter and Deb’s Evolving Relationship

As Debra moves into the world of law enforcement, her relationship with Dexter is bound to shift. Gibson shared his thoughts on this development:

"When Deb makes the call to join Miami Metro, Dexter is initially wary—logistically, it complicates things for him. But I think he’s also relieved. He’s learned that keeping her in the dark has only caused problems. While he doesn’t have feelings in the traditional sense, if he could feel for anyone, it would be Deb."

Patrick Gibson’s Favorite Scene from the Season

Reflecting on his most rewarding moment as an actor, Gibson shared:

"The kill scenes were always fun, but I particularly enjoyed the scene with Christian Slater’s Harry after Jimmy Powell’s death. Dexter is emotionally manipulating Harry, seeking permission to go after the killer. Those moments where Dexter uses emotion to get what he wants were fascinating to play."

Challenges of Playing Young Dexter

Gibson acknowledged the weight of playing an already-established character:

"The biggest challenge was maintaining continuity with the original Dexter while also bringing something fresh. He has no empathy or real emotions, yet he must remain engaging to the audience. That fine balance was the trickiest part."

Hopes for Season 2

Gibson teased what could be next for Dexter if the series continues:

"By the end of Season 1, Dexter starts to resemble the character we know. He’s gained confidence, but with that comes bigger mistakes and harder lessons. Dexter is at his best when he’s struggling to get out of a fix, so I’d love to see that explored further."

Will Dexter Get His Own Boat?

Gibson laughed at the idea:

"He might just have to! He enjoys being on the water. That last night of filming was intense, but it felt fitting. It was the perfect way to wrap up the season."
