3 Missing Original Characters We Need Back for Dexter: Resurrection

These characters have been noticeably absent from the sequel's casting announcements.

There's no doubt that the casting announcements for Dexter: Resurrection have been thrilling, with several renowned A-list actors joining the cast as series regulars or guest stars.

As the highly anticipated sequel series, starring Michael C. Hall, enters its eleventh week of production in New York City, new casting additions continue to be revealed weekly. While many of these announcements introduce fresh characters, some also bring back familiar faces.

Recently, fans were excited to learn that two iconic actors from the original series will return for Dexter: Resurrection, despite their characters having perished long ago. We’re, of course, talking about Jimmy Smits and John Lithgow, who will reprise their roles as Miguel Prado and Arthur Mitchell, respectively.

When it comes to returning living characters, Batista, Harry, and Harrison were the first to be announced back in early January. Additionally, Teddy Reed from Dexter: New Blood is set to return. However, fans have been left wondering why Angela Bishop, played by Julia Jones, has yet to be mentioned in any official announcements.

Despite the exciting cast reveals, several notable Miami Metro characters from the original series have yet to be confirmed. Below, we've compiled a list of three major characters who could play a significant role in Dexter: Resurrection, but whose return remains unannounced.

1. Thomas Matthews (Geoff Pierson)

Introduced in Season 1 of Dexter, Thomas Matthews was a key figure in Miami Metro and a close friend of Harry Morgan. Following Harry’s death, Matthews took on a protective role over Dexter and Debra at the department. While a younger version of Matthews was surprisingly cut from Dexter: Original Sin, speculation persists that his relationship with Harry may have led him to suspect Dexter's true nature. Many fans have theorized over the years that Matthews may have known—or at least strongly suspected—that Dexter Morgan is the real Bay Harbor Butcher.

This theory stems from multiple instances in Season 7, where Matthews defended Dexter against Maria LaGuerta’s suspicions. However, nothing concrete was ever confirmed. In Season 8, Geoff Pierson became a series regular, elevating Matthews' role following Luna Lauren Vélez’s departure. Still, his storyline remained largely unresolved. Could Matthews' return in Dexter: Resurrection provide long-awaited answers about his suspicions regarding Dexter’s dark secret? His inclusion could be pivotal in addressing this lingering question.

2. Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee)

One of the most beloved comic relief characters in Dexter, Vince Masuka, has yet to be announced as part of the Dexter: Resurrection cast. The last time we saw him in Season 8, he was adjusting to the shocking revelation of having an adult daughter, a result of a sperm donation in the 1990s. However, Dexter: New Blood offered a subtle update on Masuka’s life—an email on Batista’s computer screen in the finale hinted that Masuka was getting married.

While it remains unclear whether his marriage storyline will still be in play, much depends on how Dexter’s return impacts Miami Metro. Masuka's expertise as the department’s lead forensic specialist could be crucial in uncovering new developments related to Dexter’s fate.

Earlier this year, when asked on the Dexter: Final Cut aftershow about reprising his role, C.S. Lee responded, "I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I don’t know. But I would be totally open to it! To be able to play Masuka again on the small screen and act with Michael C. Hall once more would be incredible."

3. Joseph Quinn (Desmond Harrington)

Of all the potential returning characters, Joseph Quinn is perhaps the one fans are most eager to see back. Every time we share a post on Dexter Daily’s Instagram about a new actor joining the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, Desmond Harrington’s name frequently appears in the comments. Similar to Matthews, Quinn is another character who has sparked fan speculation, with many believing he knew the truth about Dexter as early as Season 5 but chose to turn a blind eye due to his relationship with Debra. While nothing has been confirmed, it would be fascinating to see how Quinn reacts to the revelation that Dexter Morgan faked his death and is now assumed to be the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Most recently, during his interview on the Dexter: Original Sin aftershow Dexter: Final Cut, Harrington was asked about a potential return to the Dexter franchise. While he remained tight-lipped, Jamie Chung hinted that fans might just see Quinn again in the future.

As Dexter: Resurrection continues production, fans eagerly await further casting announcements. Will these key Miami Metro figures return? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates!
