Clyde Phillips Explains Why Dexter: Resurrection Is Happening Now

The showrunner of Dexter reveals the true reason behind the decision.

We are now ten weeks into filming Dexter: Resurrection, with most of the action unfolding in the heart of New York City. This highly anticipated 10-episode season is set to premiere this summer, and fans couldn’t be more excited for the return of America’s favorite serial killer.

A Star-Studded Cast Joins Michael C. Hall

One of the biggest reasons for excitement surrounding this new chapter in the Dexter saga is its stellar cast. Joining Michael C. Hall are series regulars Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage, along with guest stars Krysten Ritter and Neil Patrick Harris. With such an impressive lineup, Dexter: Resurrection promises to be a season like no other in the franchise’s history.

The Shocking Revival of Dexter Morgan

Following the divisive finale of Dexter: New Blood in January 2022—where Dexter Morgan met his fate at the hands of his own son, Harrison—fans believed the story had reached its definitive conclusion. Showrunner Clyde Phillips made it clear at the time that Dexter’s death was final, telling Deadline in an interview:

"I have three words for you: Dexter is dead. I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead."

Fast forward two and a half years to San Diego Comic-Con, and Phillips stunned audiences with the announcement that Michael C. Hall would reprise his role in a new sequel series. This revelation came as a complete shock, given the firm stance taken by everyone involved just a couple of years prior.

Why Dexter: Resurrection Is Happening Now

During a recent Reddit AMA, Clyde Phillips finally shed light on why, despite previous statements, Dexter is making a comeback. According to Phillips, the revival was driven by none other than Michael C. Hall himself:

"We decided to bring the character back because Michael C. Hall came to me and said, ‘I want to keep going. Can you figure out how to ‘unkill’ me?’ My first phone call was to Scott Reynolds, and he felt the same way. It was all driven by Michael’s desire to continue, and we figured out how to make it happen."

Michael C. Hall’s Change of Heart

This revelation may come as a surprise to fans, as Hall had previously been adamant about leaving Dexter behind for good. Interestingly, the infamous scene where Harrison "kills" Dexter was actually filmed in the early days of New Blood production—at Hall’s request—to solidify Dexter’s fate.

After New Blood, Hall focused on his band, Princess Goes, touring across the U.S. and Europe. However, his return to Dexter this time is different. Unlike New Blood, which was planned as a one-season event, Dexter: Resurrection is designed for multiple seasons, ensuring a much longer future for the franchise.

The Resurgence of Dexter

Nearly two decades after its debut, Dexter is more popular than ever. The show has experienced a resurgence, thanks in part to Netflix and TikTok, where countless fan edits and memes have introduced the series to a new generation. This growing online presence has made Dexter a cultural phenomenon, especially among Gen Z audiences.

As we move closer to the highly anticipated premiere of Dexter: Resurrection, fans eagerly await the first trailer. With Michael C. Hall back in action and an all-star cast, this revival could be the most exciting chapter in Dexter history.
