How far into the future will the second season take place?
A second season of Dexter: Original Sin is officially happening! After nearly 50 days of anticipation, Paramount+ with Showtime has confirmed that the prequel series will return for another season.
Patrick Gibson is set to reprise his role as young Dexter Morgan, with most of the original cast also expected to return. While no official production start or premiere dates have been announced yet, the writers’ room is reportedly opening soon, according to TheWrap. However, the current spotlight remains on Dexter: Resurrection, which is actively filming in New York City.
Season 1 Timeline: When Did the Events Take Place?
It's widely acknowledged, through various series descriptions and in-show references, that Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 took place in 1991. During this time, Dexter was 20 years old, fresh out of college, and had just committed his first kill — Nurse Mary, also known as the Angel of Death. This marked the beginning of his journey, under the watchful eye of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, as he joined Miami Metro Police Department.
The timeline of Season 1 is fairly clear: the events unfolded between May 1991 and June 1991. While an exact end date in June hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely the season wrapped up toward the end of the month.
When Will Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 Take Place?
This is where fan speculation begins to heat up. Many are eager to see younger versions of familiar characters like James Doakes and Tom Matthews appear in future episodes. With the original Dexter series starting in 2006, there are still 15 years of untold storylines ahead for the prequel.
However, don’t expect a massive time jump just yet — and the key reason is Harry Morgan.
According to the original Dexter series, Harry lived for only one more year after the events involving Nurse Mary (depicted in the Original Sin pilot), before passing away from a heart attack — or so Dexter believed.
This firmly places the earliest possible setting for Season 2 around May 1992, giving the writers a narrow but rich window to explore.
A likely starting point could be December 1991 or January 1992, allowing the series to focus on Harry’s final months with Dexter and Debra Morgan. Exploring this dynamic will be crucial for building deeper emotional connections.
The Introduction of Tom Matthews
Season 2 may also mark the official introduction of Tom Matthews, especially now that Captain Aaron Spencer has died. Matthews and Harry shared a long-standing friendship, as referenced in flashbacks and conversations throughout the original series.
His inclusion offers another compelling reason to avoid a significant time jump — the writers will likely take time to develop Harry and Matthews' relationship before Harry’s eventual death.
Fans have been speculating since Season 1 that Brian Moser’s early return to Dexter's life may hint at a darker twist — that Harry’s death wasn’t self-inflicted, but rather the result of Brian staging a fatal act to look like one. While this theory remains unconfirmed, it could become a central mystery in the upcoming season.
Season 2 Focus: Harry Morgan’s Final Days
All signs point to Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 being centered around Harry Morgan’s final year, 1992. In a recent interview, Showrunner Clyde Phillips expressed his desire to keep Christian Slater (Harry) involved in the story for as long as possible — but not as a posthumous ghost:
"We want him in the dynamic," Phillips said.
