Dexter: Resurrection Plot Update: Showrunner Reveals Dexter & Harrison's Evolving Relationship

How will Dexter navigate his complex relationship with his son Harrison in the sequel?

The latest updates from Dexter: Resurrection have reignited excitement among fans eager to follow the next chapter in the life of America’s favorite antihero. A new batch of official stills from various episodes of the highly anticipated sequel series has been released, offering not only fresh visuals but also intriguing insights into a critical element of Season 1’s storyline: the complex and emotional dynamic between Dexter and his son, Harrison.

This narrative thread is especially significant given how their story seemingly ended in Dexter: New Blood. The finale left audiences shocked and divided, as a conflicted 16-year-old Harrison aimed a rifle at his father, ultimately pulling the trigger at Dexter’s own request. Cornered by law enforcement after Logan’s tragic and unintended death, Dexter saw no way out—except through the heart.

However, Dexter: Resurrection rewrites that ending. This revival breathes new life into the iconic character and picks up shortly after the events of New Blood. According to early details, Dexter is now living under a new identity in New York City, and although it's unclear how he survived or escaped from the hospital, the recently released images confirm he is alive, well, and seemingly thriving.

Vanity Fair recently spoke with Michael C. Hall to discuss the direction of the series, and more importantly, the evolution of Dexter and Harrison’s fractured relationship:

“Dexter has a lot of hesitation about making contact, which is a fundamental part of the tension that is pervasive for the first bit of the season,” Hall explained. “Harrison revealed himself to be, and remains, an all-the-more potent connection to Dexter’s tiny sense of humanity. He craves it, in spite of himself, so it’s a major bolt of thread running through his interior life and the life of the season.”

Showrunner Clyde Phillips also teased a pivotal moment from an upcoming episode:

“Dexter finds Harrison fairly quickly, then he asks Harry, ‘Do I reveal myself to him? Is it going to screw him up to have a zombie dad?’” Phillips said. He promises that at the “dramatically right moment,” father and son reconnect. “Dexter is determined to make sure that he has a solid—and more importantly, honest and loving—relationship with his son.”

Although Harrison wasn't exactly a fan-favorite during Dexter: New Blood’s 10-episode run, his role in Dexter: Resurrection is far from minor. In fact, the new series positions him as an integral part of the story, both emotionally and narratively.

With its gripping themes of redemption, fatherhood, and survival, Dexter: Resurrection is shaping up to be an unmissable continuation of the saga. Stay tuned as more behind-the-scenes glimpses and official updates continue to emerge in the lead-up to the series premiere.
