Michael C. Hall on Dexter: Resurrection — A Second Chance and New Beginning for the Iconic Series

Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall both express their excitement for what's ahead.

Earlier this week, Dexter fans got their first official glimpse of the highly anticipated sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, through a stunning collection of promotional stills from the first five episodes of Season 1.

These newly released images introduce the main cast and offer a visual preview of what to expect from the 10-episode season. Wondering which still belongs to which episode? We’ve got you covered—click here to find out.

As part of Vanity Fair’s exclusive reveal of 12 high-resolution stills, star Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips took a break from filming to speak via Zoom and share insights into the new series and Dexter’s long-awaited return, and of course confirmed that the series is planned to have multiple seasons.

A Behind-the-Scenes Gem

The featured image above has a cool behind-the-scenes story. It was captured between takes by executive producer and writer Scott Reynolds, who shared it on X (formerly Twitter):

“If there’s one thing we know about Dexter... it’s that this guy is smooth. Late night on Dexter: Resurrection—MCH was standing in front of this graffiti and I had to grab the photo. He agreed.”

Michael C. Hall on Returning as Dexter Morgan: “The Possibility Was Always Percolating”

Hall admits that the idea of returning to the iconic role was never fully off the table:

“We thought it would be the end, but he’s a remarkably resilient guy, so the possibility was always—at least for me—percolating.”

How Michael C. Hall Helped Spark Dexter: Resurrection

The actor played a pivotal role in getting the reboot off the ground. He reached out to Clyde Phillips—original Dexter showrunner and the creative mind behind New Blood—to explore potential ideas.

Dexter’s Evolution: Trauma, Growth, and Shedding the Past

Hall reflects on how the character has changed:

“He was severely traumatized by a lot of what happened in the original series and is only now at a place where he’s able to shed that,” he says.

“Spending time with that Original Sin material helped embroider and color in what was maybe a line drawing or an outline that I had in my mind from the beginning.”

Filming in New York: A Full-Circle Moment for Hall

For Hall, filming in New York is deeply personal. A North Carolina native, he received his MFA from NYU and began his acting career in the city:

“It’s where I, I suppose, came of age,” he says. “Now I’m shooting something like this, with a role like this, in New York City. You’re wide awake in the present, but also living what was once a dream.”

No Regrets About Dexter’s Comeback

Despite Dexter’s dramatic exit in New Blood, Hall had no serious doubts about returning:

“None that in any way serves me at the present—I’m probably dispositionally addicted to ambivalence, but no. It’s a special thing to be part of something that still gives back.”

How Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall Conceived Dexter’s Return

Phillips shares how quickly the idea came together:

“Michael said, ‘Dexter is in my bones, and I know what’s in your bones, Clyde. Can you find a way to undo what we did at the end of New Blood?’ Within a week, we had a plan.”

Uma Thurman Joins the Cast of Dexter: Resurrection

The legendary Uma Thurman is joining the Dexter universe, bringing star power and presence.

“When Uma came to the set, everything changed. She has presence,” says Phillips. “People want to work with Michael, and this isn’t just a TV show anymore.”

Why Audiences Keep Coming Back to Dexter Morgan

Clyde Phillips believes the heart of Dexter lies in Hall’s nuanced performance:

“Why invite a serial killer into your home every Sunday? Because of Michael. His voiceover adds vulnerability, relatability, and a perspective we crave.”

Dexter: Resurrection Is About Redemption

Hall and Phillips agree: this is a story of rebirth.

“It’s a second chance,” says Hall.

Phillips adds, “New York is a place where you can be lost and found—just like Dexter. For a while, he was lost, and now he’s found himself again.”
